‘Tie a Yellow Ribbon’ Music/TV Icons Tony Orlando & Dawn Reunited Shortly Before He Turned 80
Who doesn’t remember the legendary pop-tune, “Tie a Yellow Ribbon (Round the Old Oak Tree.” Along with “Candida,” and “Knock Three Times,” “Yellow Ribbon” was made popular by the famed singing threesome, Tony Orlando and Dawn.
Originally known as just “Dawn,” the group always featured Orlando, Thelma Hopkins, and Joyce Vincent Wilson (despite how their group title inferred just two people when there were three).
The group became so popular that CBS hired them to host their own weekly TV music variety show. Due to the success of other music-star-hosted series like The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and The Donny & Marie Show, The Tony Orlando & Dawn Variety Show followed suit (as did The Captain & Tennille Show).
Orlando, Hopkins, and Wilson recently reunited when the latter two ladies surprised their former bandmate on stage for a rendition of “Tie a Yellow Ribbon.” The performance transpired during what was billed as Orlando’s final live performance.
Many tears were shed among the stars and the audience for what became a successful nostalgic evening.
And now, Orlando, who today turns 80, Hopkins, and Wilson will forever be remembered by their countless fans around the world.
